And the beat goes on...
One show comes down, another goes up; all is well in the life of the theatre
It’s an exciting time at RTC -- well, it’s nearly always an exciting time here, but this is a little-known time that is particularly exciting, as the crew takes over the house. Rock music blares from a boombox, ladders reach to the rafters, and while it might look wild and chaotic, in fact such activity is the first, most visible herald of the next beat in the RTC agenda.
Just last Sunday Hello! My Baby closed to a full house and standing ovation, with twenty-five young voices raised in jubilant harmony. It was an appropriately high note to cap a sensational summer that included three full productions, a benefit concert, four showcases and dozens and dozens of young actors all deep in the throes of the creative spell.
But this rolling stone gathers no moss, and by Monday the H!MB set was down and the crew in full swing to mount RTC’s next fete, Matthew Lombardo’s Tea At Five, that brings Stephanie Zimbalist back to our stage for the fifth time. This time the spotlight will be hers alone, as she brings Katharine Hepburn back to vibrant life in the dynamic one-woman show that’s won raves from coast to coast.
With so much going on, it’s ironic that we still hear people asking “Is RTC going to make it?” They’re referring to news items and grapevine “wisdom” from this summer -- but quite frankly, we’ve been too busy with business as usual to worry overly about that scuttlebutt. We hope by now it’s clear that we’re in good hands under the oversight of CFO Pat Baldwin and her visionary financial plan, which is working beautifully.
For those still wondering after RTC fortunes and futures, and if the success of H!MB was not enough, we invite you to join us next Wednesday for Tea at Five, the next beat in our acclaimed, award-winning twelfth season, which runs through September 19 -- and get ready for lucky 13, which is just around the corner!
